PARAMO IN THE WORLD
Located in the heart of Colombia, the Sumapaz Paramo extends from
Bogotá D.C to the departments of Huila and Meta, making the Cruz
Verde-Sumapaz complex the largest paramo in the world, with an area
of approximately 3150km².
Moreover, it is one of the regions that captures the most
freshwater in the world, being of vital importance in the
hydrological cycle of the eastern Andes mountain range, providing
water to more than 2 million people in the capital and other
ecosystems. Additionally, it is home to hundreds of species of flora
and fauna, with a biodiversity of 897 plant species and 260 mammal
species.
